                                                                                SUMMER 2004

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

We are four months and counting until our "Brothers Reunited 2004" biennial reunion.  All of our reunions are for all classes regardless of year.  They are for anyone and everyone who ever attended BMI.  October 16th is rapidly approaching and NOW is the time to make arrangements for travel and hotel accommodations.  The names, addresses and phone numbers of the Bordentown area motels are listed in this issue of The Skirmisher.  I urge you to make your reservations early to avoid the risk of "No Vacancies."

Reunion packets with registration forms and detailed information regarding our reunion activities will be sent to you in a few weeks.  But don't wait for the packet.  Take action now.  Remember, Proper Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance!

Whether you've attended prior reunions or if this is your first, let me assure you it won't be your last.  The old friendships of bygone days will be rekindled, and the new friendships you will make will bring back those wonderful years at BMI as though they were just yesterday.  So come and join us for "Brothers Reunited 2004" on Saturday, October 16th.  We look forward to seeing you there.

                                                                                                Semper Fidelis,

                                                                                    Angelo V. Candelori

                                                                                                Angelo V. Candelori

                                                                                                President

P.S.  Keep those cards and letters coming.  Your comments and stories of the good old days are greatly appreciated, and it is particularly gratifying to know how much you enjoy our Skirmisher.  However, you should know that The Skirmisher is a one-person operation -- organized, edited and assembled by our dedicated and loyal secretary, Tersina DiPietro.  Your accolades should be directed to Terri.

 CLASS  NOTES

'35    WILLIAM LUCKIN writes, "Having been adopted at age 4, and of Scottish Descent, I was never legally given a middle name, as reminded by the FBI when hired by The Haloid Company in Rochester, NY…later co-named Xerox (Time:  WWII)."

'37     QUENTIN SANDLER says he is looking forward to our next Reunion.  His brother, BOB '48, also plans to attend.

'43       In a note from ED POLANSKI's wife, Ann, we learned that Ed is doing fine.  She writes, "He's on a new chemo now that saps his strength but that's only physical.  His attitude is great; he enjoys visits to the casino, sleeping on the couch in the den and phone calls and e-mails from friends.  Keep 'em coming."

'47     ROGER SANDS and his wife, Marcia, have been happily married for 53 years.  Marcia was his sweetheart while he was at BMI.  Last year, Roger and Marcia visited JOHN IMLAY '51 in Yankton, SD.

'48    JOHN SILBERMAN'S book is now available.  The title is THE LIFE AND TIMES OF AN ORDINARY JOE NAMED JOHN.  He devotes a lengthy chapter to his experiences as a BMI cadet.  To learn how to obtain a copy, you may contact John via e-mail: jks111@aol.com or by writing him at 504 S. Minnesota, Carson City, NV 89703.

'49     NICK BERTHA has many fond memories of BMI.  "What a shame," he writes, "that such a wonderful, educational institution had to close its doors.  It certainly molded the lives of many young men during its existence and all for the better, I might add."

BOB TERBUSH states, "BMI was a great source in my formative years.  I started wrestling there and carried the skills to college and then to many years of coaching.  I had a close relationship with Walt Jansen and am curious as to what has happened to him.  I am living in Tarpon Springs, FL, where I am still active in Outrigger Canoe racing and kayaking."

'50    HOWARD SHERMAN plans to leave the sunny south just long enough to attend Reunion 2004.  Howard resides in Marco Island, FL, with his wife Sally.

'54    Our president, ANGELO CANDELORI '56, received a message from NICK KRAWCIW in which Nick thanks us for THE SKIRMISHER and "for all that you're doing for our BOB (Band of Brothers)."

MIKE RUDOLPH shares a memory:  "One summer day, must have been in the mid-seventies, my wife and I were taking a ride up to Lenox for a concert at Tanglewood.  As we were passing the Lenox/BMI school, I saw the back of this short, kind of fat, kind of bald guy walking along the side of the road with, as I recall, an Irish setter tagging at his side.  I would have recognized Marvin Oliver Borst from any direction.  (Remember his signature: 'MOB for the Dean'?)  So I stopped the car, got out and went over to him.  Not only did he remember me, but he asked me how I was doing in law school!  It didn't matter that I had graduated law school maybe 12-15 years before and had been out of BMI for probably 20 years.  In his eyes, it happened only yesterday.  My wife says that when I got back in the car, I cried.  I probably did."

WAYNE SEIBER writes, "I hope our President is still in running shape and will be able to lead all alumni around the track on 10/16/04."

'56     ISAIAH "BUD" HAINES was found by BOB MARKEL '55.  Isaiah wasn't far away.  He lives in Southampton, NJ.

'57     EDGAR "TOPPER" BRICK writes, "I am president of my investment advisory firm consisting of my wife Betty, my son Andy and five others.  Betty and I are taking more time off, spending part of the summer in Colorado and winters in Naples, Florida."

'59     MARK MANLEY was the recipient of one of our surplus yearbooks.  He writes, "Although I am seldom home afternoons, yesterday was an exception and so when the UPS man came, I received my copy of my BMI Yearbook.  That ended all plans to leave in any hurry, as I went page by page into history.  They were there, my classmates from years ago, and I could recognize them.  They looked just as I remembered them.  They were doing the things we did together, and at the places I can't forget.  The uniforms, the classes, the teachers, the buildings all came rushing back…what a trip!"

'60     DICK KERN sent his dues with a note:  "I hope to join all of you at a reunion in the future."

'61     FRANK POGUE sent an e-mail message asking to join the Association.  Frank tells us that the last time he was in Bordentown "was a strange and fun paper chase.  I waited until life was half over before going to college and just weeks before graduation, I was told that there was no record of my high school and I could never graduate until the problem was solved.  Flew up and rented a car.  Found nothing but an empty lot.  Went to the courthouse and they got the folks from the public school.  Went all through the microfilm and then back home to graduate."

'62    JIM BRENDLE writes, "Thanks for all you do to keep the flame alive."  (See Jim's interesting and amusing article under "MEMORIES" on page 5.)

'63     JACK AQUILA was "found" by WALT GODWIN '44.  Jack is a Sales Associate with Century 21 in Clinton, NJ.  Also, he is affiliated with Inter-City Press, Inc., in Lebanon, NJ, where he resides.  He said he hopes to attend Reunion 2004.

MARTIN KAZIMIR was "found" by super-sleuth WALT GODWIN '44.  Martin lives in Fishkill, NY.

LAWRENCE Mc CARTER writes, "I was very sorry to hear of the death of Mr. Angelo J. Arabio, a fine teacher and a good man.  I was also sorry to learn of the passing of JIM FETTERLY '62.  I remember Jim well as a member of the BMI track and cross-country teams and, of course, as a Cadet 1st Lt. and Commander of the BMI Band.  When I read the announcement, I went to my copy of the 1962 SWORD AND SABRE yearbook which certainly helped to bring back some good memories of some better times and the privilege of having known these fine men."

BERNARD SANSARICQ was also shocked to learn of the passing of JAMES FETTERLY '62.  Bernard writes, "I remember him as an upperclassman who was just a great guy.  I believe he was the senior officer of the band in 1962, and I remember he was a very nice and kind gentleman who was just proud to be in BMI.  I can remember as though it were yesterday a conversation we had while waiting to get a haircut in 1962.  James Fetterly was a GREAT CADET and a credit to BMI."

'64     RICHARD GRIBBIN is the Quality Control Manager with Jas. W. Glover, Ltd., General Contractors, in Hilo, Hawaii.

JOHN LONGANECKER sent up-to-date address information on his fellow classmates and football players: TONY SANTY, PIERRO GIRAFFA, TOM STRETCH, NICK METROKOTSAS, AND VIC RADZEVICH.  (Thanks for the info, John.)

'65     LOUIS IRMISCH, MD writes, "All is well in Buffalo, NY.  I have taken a full-time position with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Western NY.  I am their Medical Director of Medical Management.  However, I am trying to get a job in Florida; this cold is getting to me.  I am still in the Navy Reserve stationed at the Naval Academy.  My older son got smart and transferred from the US Air Force and is now wearing the uniform of the US Navy.  BIG IMPROVEMENT!  Hope to come to the Reunion.  Go Navy…Beat Army."  (Did he really say that?!)

DANNY KIND joined the Association through the never-ending efforts of WALT GODWIN '44.  Danny lives in Port St. Lucie, FL.

'68     We received this from PINTO, J. J. FIRST SGT. BRAVO COMPANY.  "Semi-retired after teaching my first love, US History, in parochial high schools in both Towson, MD, and South Jersey and helping to raise four stepchildren.  My wife, Barbara, and I just celebrated our 10th Anniversary.  We were college sweethearts at St. Joseph's College in the late 1960s.  RICH GILARDI, LARRY KOPEC and I got together in Bordentown in May.  Like latter-day Urban Anthropologists, we scoured the former campus.  We found that the old concrete steps running from the Y-Hut are still there and that the ancient 'roller' used to roll the track is still in the lower corner of the track & field where Herb left it.  I was sorry to hear of the passing of JAY LUISI '57, FACULTY AND COACH.  I did get to see him a couple of times in the mid '90s.  Saw JACK BOYD '56 at a couple of girls basketball holiday shootouts.  He looks terrific!  Like he stepped out of a J. Crew catalog, of course."  Jay also wrote that he and his wife toured Bordentown in April and had dinner at one of the great Bordentown restaurants.

'69    At its commencement ceremonies in May, Rider University awarded DOUG PALMER, Mayor of the City of Trenton, an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws.  (Congratulations, Doug!)

'71     DAVID SMITH lives in York, PA, and is interested in communicating with members of the Class of 1971.  He writes, "I have been reading the previous postings of the Skirmisher on the web.  I was sad to hear of the passing of COLONEL BRADMAN.  I was glad I got to see him at Reunion 1992.  My most anxious moments were spent outside his office waiting for him to say, 'Enter.'  I spent five years of my life at BMI.  It was and is a big part of my life."

'75    On January 30, 2004, JOE HARTMAN and his fiancée Debra Adams were married in Columbia County, Lake City, FL.

SMALL WORLD…

GEORGE PHILLIPS '54 was engaged in a conversation with a patron in his restaurant.  It turns out that the patron was JIM CHESTER '56.  George told him about the BMI Alumni Association and now Jim is a new member.

JAY PINTO '68 says he literally ran into EDDIE HUGHES '68 in a Sam's Club parking lot last December.  He writes, "Actually, Eddie flagged me down.  He said that my fashionable goatee didn't hide my familiar face!"

HOWARD SHERMAN '50 and RAY APY '50 attended a Memorial Day Service on Marco Island, FL.  It was quite hot so they decided to stand under a tree in the cemetery.  During the service, they looked down and the headstone at their feet was inscribed as follows:  Hilburn Edward Smith, BMI, US Coast Guard, World War II, June 18, 1928-May 19, 1978.  There was a Coast Guard Flotilla at the Service and Howard asked if BMI had any meaning to them and they replied that it did not.  "So Hilburn Edward Smith probably was a BMI cadet sometime around 1925 or 1926," says Howard.

FLORIDA GET TOGETHER

HOWARD SHERMAN '50 reports that a group of alumni in the Florida area got together on March 14th at the Double Tree Hotel in Palm Beach Gardens, FL.  Attending were:  RAY APY '50, GEORGE BALDWIN '41, DONALD BIGGS '54, HARRY BISSELL '41, HARRY "BUD" HOWE '50, MICHAEL JOYCE '63, FRED LEARY '59, WILLIAM NEUBAUER '37, STEVEN SAGAL '63, URBAN SALTUS '50, BERNARD SANSARICQ '63, HOWARD SHERMAN '50, EDWARD TOMAS '51.  Wives and family members were also present.  A good time was had by all.

MEMORIES

JIM BRENDLE '62 said FLOYD LITTLE '63 signed his, Jim's, yearbook this way:  "Being no poet, having no fame, please permit me to sign my name."

Jim goes on to say:  "There are many stories to tell from the days of Floyd Little at BMI.  This is a shot at one of them.  I would encourage any of the guys from the '61 football team (including Floyd) to comment on its accuracy as the years may have dented an old guy's memory.  I remember the two-a-day practices in August '61 were pretty grueling.  Since school had not started yet, most of the time between practices was spent cleaning our rifles and drilling on the

parade field.  I think the first week we scrimmaged Lawrenceville Prep on their home field.  If I remember, it was a reasonable engagement that we won easily.  I do not remember any specifics, except I got to play some.  The next week a somber attitude settled over the team as the two-a-days, drillings and military life style set in.  Preparations were made for a scrimmage the next Friday/Saturday with Peddie Prep.  We dressed in our practice uniforms at BMI and took a bus up to Peddie.  As we rolled onto that ivy-covered campus, I sensed our focus was to get in there, take care of business, and get out.  I remember Peddie coming out of their locker room just wildly screaming their heads off.  They were wearing the best imitation Princeton jerseys with classic stripes on the sleeves.  By comparison, our practice jerseys weren't exactly from Nieman Marcus.  During the two-a-days and the scrimmage with Lawrenceville, it was evident that there was someone in our presence with outstanding skills.  The opening series of plays at Peddie certainly confirmed it for me.  This is where I may need some help.  My recollection has it that Floyd scored on the first play of every series we got the ball (i.e. four plays for BMI – four touchdowns).  That kind of settled down the rah…rah from the Peddie side of the field.  Again, I got a little chance to play.  My opponent on the Peddie side actually shook my hand when I came onto the field after the four touchdowns.  He knew it was over.  I knew it was over.  We all knew as the season progressed how special Floyd really was.  I remember he could move sideways faster than most backs, at any level, could move forward.  I am proud to have played with him, blocked for him, but most of all, to have known his fine character and personality."

The following is from a letter written by a former Bordentonian to the BORDENTOWN REGISTER NEWS:

As a little girl I grew up in historic Bordentown, NJ.  Memorial Day was my favorite holiday.  The participants in the Memorial Day parade always gathered on the corner of Prince and Burlington streets before the parade that started at 9 a.m.  I would hear footsteps and a faint call of young men, "left, right, left, right, left," coming from a far distance.  I would listen as the footsteps drew near, hitting the pavement, and the chanting from the young men

grew louder and louder.  When I knew they were rounding the corner, I would jump out of bed, push the window open more, stick my face to the screen and look out to watch the Bordentown Military Institute cadets get in their positions for the parade.  They were all dressed up in the blue cadet uniforms.  There were American flags standing high and waving in the breeze. I would run out and follow the parade all the way to the corner above the railroad tracks on Farnsworth Avenue where the memorial services were held.

We received the following e-mail from a Bordentonian following Reunion 2002:

I'm not a former cadet nor am I in the military.  I'm a 40-year-old Bordentonian who grew up just down the street from BMI.  BMI was a very big part of my childhood.  Seeing the reunion pictures of the alumni walking the parade route in Bordentown was great.  I remember when you all did that (in full uniform) in our parades.  My memories of BMI are vivid.  I played in the woods around the pond on both of the fields (we called them the Big BMI and Little BMI fields).  I watched as you assembled in the courtyard line each night around 6:00 o'clock.  I learned how to play tennis on the clay courts.  Unfortunately, I witnessed many of the fires that slowly removed BMI's presence.  The saddest day was when the Main Building burned down.  I am glad to see that you all get together to remember your time at BMI and Bordentown.  The town has changed and many people are not as fortunate as my friends and I were to have known about BMI.  Good luck to all of you and thanks for the memories….Chris Gordon

(If you have ever questioned what the townspeople thought of your presence, now you know.)

DO YOU REMEMBER?

JAY PINTO '68 wonders if anyone remembers the name of a faculty member who came down from Canada to sub for Dr. Bert Light in the Spring Semester 1968.  Jay says, "He was a big, burly, Runyonesque character…drove a 1959 Jaguar XJ-6, wore a Burberry trenchcoat with the classic green felt Alpine fedora.  Also, he threw the hammer (track and field event) as a hobby.”  If you can supply the name, please contact Jay at buvala@comcast.net
