PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

For five long years, Muslims and Ethnic Albanians were murdered, raped and abused in Kosovo, and the United States stood by with idle threats, totally INDIFFERENT, until the media made the case of another Holocaust. True, we have now acted with great exuberance and, as is usually the case, we are doing far more than our share. But the fact remains that countless thousands are dead, countless lives have been ruined, and for far too long the United States was INDIFFERENT.

INDIFFERENCE is not caring, neutrality, nonchalance, "regardlessness," not giving a damn. It’s "let Jack do it," or "not in my backyard." INDIFFERENCE is the greatest destroyer of mankind.

For more than a dozen years, a very precious few have labored tirelessly to recreate and maintain the BMI Alumni Association in order to perpetuate the priceless memory of a school that taught us the very best of life: God…Duty…Honor…Country…Discipline…Self-Control…Respect and how to earn it.

We have erected a magnificent Statue at the sight of OLD MAIN, with plaques that will tell countless generations who we were and what we stood for. We reune biennially and keep in touch through our SKIRMISHER. All we ask of you as Alumni is to send us $10 per year as dues to keep us out of our Capital Account. To date, 30% have responded and to them I say, "Thank you." To the 70% who have not, it is simply utter and absolute INDIFFERENCE.

Remember some of those who taught us: Smith…Borst…Crobaugh…Wise…Colby…Fullington… Hartpence…Husker. Were they ever INDIFFERENT??? Never!!! They were always there when you needed them.

REMEMBER YOUR ROOTS AND SEND US YOUR $10 TODAY!!!!!!!!!!

NEXT MUSTER…SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2000

IT WILL BE THE BEST EVER!

CLASS NOTES

1914

On his 104th birthday, Henry Meloney played 18 holes of golf in Sedona, Arizona. He had to give up tennis a few years ago as he "lost a little quickness."

1938

John E. Kozanas was a Day Student, P.G., but considers that one year as the best of his life.

1943

S/Sgt. H. Kenyon landed in Normandy on June 6, 1944, and was in continuous combat for 308 days with the 90th "Tough Hombres" Division, longer than any other outfit in Europe. He returned to Normandy for the 40th and 50th Anniversaries of D-Day. (How soon we forget. Please attend Reunion 2000. We will have a special place for you.)

1944

Ray Fulton recently moved to Tucson, Arizona.

George Ray found a classmate, Louis H. Benzing, who was West Point ’48 and he rightly suggests that if each alumnus who attended a BMI Reunion would take it upon himself to find a classmate, it would go a long way toward perpetuating our Reunions. (Amen!)

1945

Herb Garten promises to attend Reunion 2000. (Well, Herb, if you don’t, we will have one of our Baltimore enforcers break your legs.)

1947

Pete MacEwan sent us his dues but says now he can’t afford any socks this year. (Oh, Pete. I didn’t know folks in Arizona wore socks.)

1948

Horace Terstappen was found by classmate, Bob Sandler, and remembers his 4 years at BMI as very important. His granddaughter attends Princeton so Horace is in this area often. (Hope we will see him up from Marco Island, FL, in October 2000.)

Richard "Punch" Whalen will be at Reunion 2000. (Oy!)

1955

Roger Spivak (Is he the good looking one or the smart one?) thought that Washington’s Birthday was a good day to send dues. He remembers that in his senior year at BMI, the Band won the Rifle Assemble and Disassembly and Precision Drill Competitions, but was not awarded Best Company because Bands do not compete. (Says who?)

1956

LTC Francis Giove, US Army Ret., suggests a great book entitled "The Roots of American Order" by Russell Kirk. (Seems our thoughts about INDIFFERENCE fired up a few thoughts.)

1958

J. R. Arthur visited Bordentown recently and, in Scottish attire, played a couple of tunes on his pipes at the Cadet Statue. Ms. Ellen Wehrman who lives in the old Hopkinson House came out to greet J. R. and his daughter, Kellie, and invited them into her home to talk about Bordentown and BMI for about an hour and a half. "It was great!" says J.R.

1959

Walter Fetterly found his classmate, Bob Kesty, through the World Wide Web and thereby learned of our Association. (Keep looking…there are lots of us out there.)

1963

Bernard Sansaricq was found by Mike Hurka while surfing the Web under
"Classmates in the Internet."

1964

Ed Jessup says he will make Reunion 2000, and that he has moved from Northern Virginia to Southern Maryland. Ed is with the Naval Air Systems Command at Patuxent River NAS.

1965

Tom Brownback, one of our two cadets who still fit into BMI uniforms (disgusting!) tells us of the joy he gets whenever he puts it on. (Tom, I promise

you that if I would get the pant leg over my knee, I would feel the same way.)

1968

Tom O’Donnell has left Kean University after 30 years and is now Director of Student Development at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

KEEP THOSE CARDS AND LETTERS COMING OUR WAY!

YOUR CLASSMATES WANT TO HEAR ABOUT YOU.

IN MEMORIAM

A note from Mrs. Stahl brings the sad news that her husband, Albert E. Stahl III ’41, passed away in December 1997.

A former BMI faculty member, Mr. Harold P. DuShane, died on April 11, 1999. We were pleased to see Mr. DuShane at our Reunion several years ago.

The Association extends sincerest sympathy to the families of these members.

FROM THE MAIL BOX

In our mailbox recently, we found a wonderful letter from Dr. Carmine DeSopo, the Superintendent of the Burlington County Special Services School District, thanking us for a donation we made to the School for the Band that performed so beautifully for us at our last Reunion. Each of the Band members has a physical and/or mental handicap. They gave a splendid performance at our Reunion. It was the first time they did any of the Bugle Calls and they were superb. Dr. DeSopo told us that these kids enjoyed playing for us and they will be back for Reunion 2000.
